Before I start ranting about how much I love Mewgenics, I would like to provide some context. Mewgenics is a turn-based game (which is wild because I usually hate turn-based games), where the stats, and some abilities are determined by breeding cats. Mewgenics was first teased back in 2013 but it was canceled up until January 2018, when they continued production. It was made by Edmund Mcmillen and Tyler Glaiel. Edmund and Tyler have been working together for quite some time, collaborating on games such as, The Binding of Isaac, The End is Nigh, and Aether. Fun fact: some of these games came out after the first teaser of Mewgenics.
Tons of Gameplay
One thing I adore about this game is the sheer amount of gameplay. I have 50 hours in this game and the progress percentage is only at 20% which means I’ve only scratched the surface of what there is to explore. And you might be thinking “well maybe this dude is just slow” first off, maybe I am slow, second, there has already been so much I’ve seen. In act 1 alone I’ve seen 5 areas, each with one main boss, and two mini bosses, (with the exception of the first area which has 4 mini bosses and 2 main bosses) along countless amounts of encounters/battles. Also every once in a while there are bosses that will “attack your house,” during this the cats you fought with before can be sent into battle one last time. This gives you an opportunity to pick the best of your cats that you use to make the best team possible and fight off a big monster. This does sound scary but if you lose the fight the cats die and nothing else happens, which is sad but if you’re like me then you’re gonna lose a lot of cats. Mind you, this is only act 1, to my knowledge (I just got into act 2) there are 3 acts so multiply what I said by 3.
Various Combos
Mewgenics has over 1000 different abilities, around 160 being not class exclusive meaning any cat can get these through a run but they tend to be pretty lame. The cool stuff is in the many class based abilities. For example, the fighter focuses on getting in the middle of everyone and doing damage but doesn’t focus on having health. The cleric focuses on taking care of your allies, while having a bit more health than the rest, and acts as the healer but isn’t really good at doing damage. The ranger is amazing at getting enemies far away, but struggles close-range, and has abilities that can have high damage but have a pretty large chance to miss. These are only 3 of the 13 classes in the game, each of them having their own strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses of each class can combo really well together. I’ve played the game for a total of 50 hours as of writing this, I am still finding new, amazing synergies, and even some that involve only one cat (but they tend to be cooler when the whole team combos). One of my favorite combos was with my necromancer, cleric, and fighter. The necromancer had a debuff that would steal its health to everyone, including your own cats. That would be a pretty strong downside if it wasn’t for the cleric that could remove stacks of debuffs and replace them with stat-ups, then my fighter could then double the stat ups it received. This led to my fighter being a powerhouse, and my necromancer stealing life from everyone making them basically invincible.
Outstanding Music
This game has a large variety of absolutely impeccable music. For some context each area has instrumental music and when you fight the bosses of that area you get vocals on top of the instrumental. Not only that but there are House tracks that play on the radio at your house. All of this amounts to a total of 54 tracks with vocals and 28 instrumentals. Just by listening to the music passively you can tell the people that made it (mainly Matthias Bossi and Jon Evans) put effort and passion into what they created. I find myself listening to the Mewgenics OST pretty often and I cannot get enough of it. Some personal favorites of mine are ‘Chumbucket Kitty’, ‘Tuff’, ‘Brush Your Teeth’, and ‘Feline Invader’, (I’m listening to Feline Invader right now) which I highly recommend you listen to. It’s all really good.
Lively Characters
The wide cast of unique and funny NPC’s is something I enjoy a lot. Each NPC has a different function that you can upgrade through donating cats. A few good examples are Butch and Steven. He serves as the battle guy that can give you more classes, battle info, and equipment storage. His personality also reflects him being “the battle guy”. Butch is tough, unforgiving, and at times just mean (if you’re bad like me). but I love that because it matches his function of fighting. Steven is a powerful being that is able to affect your cats negatively, if you decide to save-scum*, and his personality reflects that. Steven is sort of a psycho and has a short fuse when it comes to cheaters. It could have been so easy to just put a wall of text that said “you cheated now your cat gets punished,” but instead they decided to add a whole NPC for that. (we all love Steven he’s great)
*save-scumming is when you leave the game before it saves to reverse what you did.
Background
Mewgenics was first teased by a music video back in August 2013. It was promoted as a cat breeding game where you, “collect the good cats and throw the rest away.” (basically get rid of the cats with bad stats.) While not much of the game was actually released in this video people were excitedly waiting and would stay waiting for a whole 12 years. Yup that’s right, Mewgenics came out pretty recently on February 10, 2026. Although it took a long time, it was definitely worth the wait.
Also something that I couldn’t fit in is that there are multiple cameos from a bunch of other people and it was funny to have a cat that sounded like Markiplier.
1000/10 would highly recommend
