There I was, at the Blackfoot Movie Mill, popcorn in hand, a cup filled with several different sodas in my other. My expectations were high, but my goodness. I couldn’t have anticipated how much odd neutrality I would have had as I walked out of the theatre.
There were a few things I hated about this movie, but at the same time, there were very few things I loved about it. Diving right in, I couldn’t help but feel like Elphaba’s relationship with Fiyero was completely unnecessary and could’ve easily been scrapped for literally any other extra plotline they wanted to include. They both had little to no chemistry or passion with each other throughout the first and second movies, and I feel like the writers just added it to give Elphaba something to do besides saving animals and being eerily close with Glinda.
Besides that, the fact that The Wizard couldn’t figure out that Elphaba was his daughter until it was spelled out in front of his face is beyond me. You’re telling me he couldn’t figure out that the one Green girl in all of Oz was his daughter? Fat chance! He can do the math, he’s not stupid, he literally built an empire off being a conman, and you have to be at least a little okay at math to do all of that. I am tired of people pretending that The Wizard is all that and a bag of chips when he is nothing more than free guac.
Another thing is the fact that they put glitter on Arianna Grande’s collarbones and very visible shoulder bones, which makes it feel like they’re highlighting eating disorders as something to be associated with the elegance and beauty of Glinda as a character. Not a good thing to be showing to their target audience of children. Eating Disorder culture is not something to be glamorized and if you do struggle with an Eating Disorder of any kind I highly encourage you to seek help from an adult you trust, or call the ANAD Eating Disorder Hotline at (888)-375-7767 to get the help you need. You are not alone, and there are people who want to help.
To conclude, there were a lot of good things about the Wicked 2 movie (Wicked For Good). But there were also a lot of bad and unnecessary things. And honestly, instead of investing your time into watching Wicked 2 (Wicked For Good), you should go home and watch something much better: “Confessions of a Shopaholic” Starring Hugh Dancey.
