Thanksgiving is an American holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of every November. Which usually is on the last week of the month or can fall onto the 22nd or 23rd of November.

Though some people don’t really know why or how Thanksgiving came to be. Also how it caught on to become a traditional holiday celebrated by thousands. The background of Thanksgiving is explained and how the traditions came to be.

In 1621 the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast. The feast was for the first harvest of the year in the new word. At the time the colonist hunted the wild turkey, which became a traditional meal since then.

The only time Thanksgiving was celebrated was when they finished their first harvest of the year. In 1863, president Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official national holiday. Then in 1941 Thanksgiving was to be considered to be on the fourth Thursday in November.

After the holiday became official there are some traditions that happen to pick up throughout the years. In the United States most people prepare for the Superbowl or other festivities that go on during Thanksgiving day.

The super bowl happens to be a well known entertainment during Thanksgiving. The football team Lions started playing on thanksgiving day and became a well known game from 1934 to the present, which started the football traditions on thanksgiving.

Some more entertainment traditions that also carry on during Thanksgiving are, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving which came out on November 20, 1973. Also a monologue, “Alice’s Restaurant” that airs on classic rock or classic stations on the radio.

The Macy’s parade is the most iconic parade, that started in 1924, in New York City. The parade takes place on Thanksgiving day.

There are some people in the country that don’t have enough to be able to pay or have a meal, so there are charity events to help those out. The salvation army is one of the biggest charities that help out people during the holidays.

Thanksgiving has shaped America into being thankful for what they have. Family, friends and other things that your appreciate and feel grateful for.
