Seniors host track meet for senior project

May 21 & 22

Hosting a track meet at Blackfoot High School as a senior project has not been done since 2004.  Now this year, Abby Hurst, Derek Thomas, and Jacob Despain brought it back. On May 21 and 22, the senior project was hosted at the Blackfoot High School track. All the fifth graders in the district came and participated on the 21st while the sixth graders came on the 22nd. It was a fun filled activity where young students were able to tryout different events and cheer each other on.

“I loved seeing the kids have fun and all the smiling faces,” Despain said.

Part of the uniqueness of this event was giving an atmosphere where the kids could work together and grow as a district. With all the elementary schools participating, the kids were given the opportunity to get to know other students from schools they didn’t normally get to see. Being in such a wholesome environment and getting a positive experience can also stimulate a love for the activity.

“Hopefully they learn to love track,” Thomas said.

The overall senior project included many tasks and careful planning. Jason Lish and Roger Thomas contributed their time to help. They supported the idea from the very beginning and helped make it run smooth. The seniors were even able to put together awards and medals for the winners. Some sponsors that donated were Ridley’s, Despain Construction, and Trestlewood.

The seniors successfully hosted a track meet and was able to inspire the students and the community as a whole.

“I always loved running and I wanted to share my love and experience,” Hurst said.
