Americas Got Talent winner releases album

Is it possible to equally love and hate something at the same time, but for two very separate reasons? If so, then I would definitely say that is how I feel about Grace VanderWaal’s new album Just The Beginning. First of all, let’s discuss that Grace is 13 years old. Thirteen. Most people who have heard of her only know her because she won America’s Got Talent in 2016. At age 12. Singing an original song. No big deal.

There are 12 songs on the album, and I can honestly say I’ve never heard an album that has jerked my emotions around so much. Either I absolutely loved the song and kept it on repeat for 76 hours straight or listened to it once and deleted it off my playlists. I will say, however, there were more songs on the album that I loved than songs that I hated.

The main reason I hated the songs that I did is plain and simple:  they were simply too real for me to handle. She’s thirteen, she should not seem like she understands so much about the world and the really crappy things in it. I don’t even know that much about life and I’m four years older than she is. Some songs were real dark, and I didn’t wanna listen to them.

Regardless of those slight few, I loved the rest of the songs. I’m not lying when I say they’ve been on constant repeat.

This album does bring up some red flags for me as far as Grace’s well being is concerned. It’s no surprise that fame and fortune destroy people (i.e. Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus, just about every celebrity ever). Grace is 13, and she’s already won a huge tv show, released an EP and an entire album. How long until the terrible world she sings about in a few of her songs ruins her?
