Blackfoot High School has six parking lots including rec center/pool parking, senior parking, Bronco parking, racquetball parking, BPAC parking, and Riverbend parking which became a spot after the second drawing. The way that students would have gotten a spot is through a Google Doc which you would have to enter your name, information about your car, and what parking spots you would prefer to park in.
The first drawing of parking spots done by the school had to be redone. Mr. Roger Thomas, principal, said, “What they did is they forgot that the BPAC was an option for kids and so because one whole parking spot was left out we needed to do the redraw. So we went back and did a redraw and it took us about four hours. We tried to honor everybody’s first choices and there were several that had to go into their second choice.”
After that, all of the students who got a spot in the second drawing had to then claim their spot at the bookstore where they would have to pay if the parking spot had a price for it. Once they paid they would get a sticker that they would have to put in the back window of their vehicle which had the name of the parking lot and the number of the parking spot that the student had to park in.
“And then if (the spot) weren’t claimed, we took those students out and put them on a No Claim list and then we redrew the kids that wanted it. So every kid that put in for the second chance drawing got a parking spot somewhere.” Thomas added during the interview. Those who did not claim their spot then got a spot at the Riverbend Elementary.
When asked about changes coming to parking, Thomas responded with a plan that he had where students had to fill out a Google Form like this trimester except it will work like how Club Sign Ups work where it’ll disappear if it is full.
“Next trimester, what we’re going to do is we want everybody to have their assigned spot by day one of the second trimester. About two weeks before this trimester ends, we’re going to advertise that one specific date, we’re going to send out a Google Form through email and it will be first come first serve. Just like with our club days, once the club is full it’s no longer a choice.”
Brayden Boyce (12) said he doesn’t like his current parking lot when he needs equipment for sports. “I can’t leave anything in my car. If it was just a normal school day then I’m fine with it but, that’s why I liked having Racquetball parking, so I can easily walk out and grab all my stuff,” Boyce said.
Dane Hunter (12) parks in the rec center parking lot. “I love where I park, just the fact that I can get out in much quicker time if I was in the BPAC,” Hunter said
While it may only be the beginning of this first trimester, I cannot wait to see what comes out of the second trimester with the changes Thomas has in mind and what will come out of the next trimester in general.
