Ballroom prepares for first competition
Ballroom team is waltzing to their first competition. Their new teacher, Stefney Wixom, will be taking them to their first competition.
Wixom took over the program this year from Julie Coles. Wixom has taught the team three dances this trimester – Fake ID, Ladies Choice, and Masquerade. Typically, students are able to choose their partners for one of the dances.
Ladies Choice is a ‘60s swing style of dance and the music is from Hairspray. Masquerade is a waltz and the music is from Phantom of the Opera. Fake ID is a country line dance. They will perform Ladies Choice and Masquerade at the competition.
“[I] like learning different dances and being able to have a different partner for certain dances,” Rylan Case (10) said.
“We have been doing a variety [of dances] this year, I wanted all the kids to be able to try every type of dance,” Wixom said.
The Ballroom team has practiced during class to get these dances down for the competition coming up. They have been working on them throughout the trimester, and have performed their Fake ID dance at football halftimes and school assemblies.
“Our team has shown dramatic improvement this trimester,” Wixom said.
The competition, Western States Dance Competition, will be held at Blackfoot High School on December 9. High schools and dance teams in the area will attend this competition. This will be their first competition of the year. There will be another one, specifically for ballroom, in March.
“This is still a new program, but I believe that if they perform to the best of their ability, they will definitely bring home some trophies,” Wixom said.
