It has reappeared on TikTok once again; the ice bucket challenge has resurfaced on social media to raise money and awareness for mental health, and it’s taking social media by storm. If you haven’t seen or heard of it, which would be surprising considering the popularity that it has brought to the masses. The way to do this challenge is by getting notated or doing it yourself, then nominating someone else, you, or the person notated will grab a bucket, fill it up with water and ice, and dunk yourself for a good cause.
As of May 8th, it has raised over $400,000 for Active Minds, a non-profit organization. It was started by the University of South Carolina by the students there after being inspired by the original and seeing the success it had had in the world, knowing they could make a change and make sure people know the struggles of mental health.
The origins of this challenge go back to 10 years ago in 2014. By Pat Quinn and Pete Frates, these two men were battling Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ASl). While we can’t see how many participated this year just yet, 2014 saw over 17 million participants worldwide.
This challenge originally raised 220 million dollars for the ASL worldwide. Which was a huge achievement for the cause of ASL, so with all this in mind go out there and participate in this challenge and bring awareness to both of these causes.
