On April 4, 2025, the Minecraft Movie, produced by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, made its public release with it having grossed $550 million globally. While this makes it a financial success and is seen as a huge meme online, I think it is a pretty bad movie that I wouldn’t recommend watching.
Spoilers about the Minecraft Movie ahead.
After watching the movie with a couple of friends, I have two separate thoughts. I feel like the movie was pretty overhyped and just overall felt like they relied heavily on their one off jokes that were in the movie such as Chicken Jockey, Flint & Steel, and so on. On top of this, one thing that I thought was interesting is that the movie takes place in a fictional town in Idaho named Chuglass which is known for their potatoes, something which is very close to home.
To start with what I disliked about the movie, the lighting was one of the reasons and how inconsistent at times it was. An example of this is when Henry, played by Sebastian Hansen, grabs the orb which illuminates the left side of Garrett’s face, who is played by Jason Mamoa, when it should be on the right side. While small details like that don’t exactly make or break the movie for me, it does add up with other inconsistencies which does make the movie worse, especially on a second or many other watches.
Another thing I did not like about the movie was how barebones and pretty bad the writing was with most of it just being focused on gags instead of telling a good story. Sometimes, things just happen to advance the plot like Steve randomly appearing to save the main characters before saying, I am Steve. Malgosha is also barely present and didn’t really do much besides send out a group of piglins and ghasts twice before the climax of the movie she sends a large army of piglins. Another thing that didn’t make much sense was how they essentially killed off Garrett but just ended up not committing to it as he comes back riding on a Ghast, even though he was in point blank range of an explosion that happened earlier in the movie.
I feel like most if not all of the success that the movie has seen is because of social media blowing it up with a lot of clips of the movie (if not the full movie) being posted online with most of them being voice lines that Steve, a character played by Jack Black, says along with his actions during it. Because of this, I feel like it is a fun bad movie but is nowhere near as good compared to many other films and would recommend generally avoiding watching the movie unless you absolutely have to. The way people are acting during the movie also just makes watching the movie worse with things like popcorn being thrown everywhere, a chicken being brought into the theater, and yelling at the screen being things that have been seen in an attempt to gain social media attention.
Overall, the movie is just not that good and is carried by people online being obnoxious while struggling in being a good movie. If I had to rate the movie it would be a solid 2 out of 5 stars with my opinion of it being that it’s Better to watch with friends so you have someone to make fun of the movie with. That not said, this has been Luisrey Moreno Zamora from the BroncWriter, signing off.
