The Lumineers, a popular alternative folk band, released the album titled Automatic on Valentine’s Day this year. Wesley Shultz and Jeremiah Fraites founded The Lumineers in 2005 and this will be their 5th studio album. The band is known for the popular songs “Ophelia” and “Ho Hey.”
While I don’t think this album is their top work they’ve done, it was quite good all around. All of the songs were good, but only a few were great. This is unlike some of their albums, like Cleopatra which came out in 2016, where every song was amazing, in my opinion.
There were motifs throughout the songs, tying them together and making it almost like a storytelling experience. This follows the common trend with The Lumineers and other folk bands of telling stories with their music. I love this style of music as it can make the listening experience relatable and sometimes fun.
After multiple full listens, my favorite song from the entire album is “Ativan.” It is on the sadder side but also has a very hopeful feel. I love the beautiful lyrics in this song that almost feels like a poem. It’s a wonderful song. A close second from Automatic is the single “Same Old Song.” The lyrics are very relatable and it has a fun tune that sticks in your head for a while after listening.
All in all, this was a joy to listen to. I enjoyed listening to how the songs would be tied together. If you are someone who enjoys alternative folk music, this is the album for you.
Taking their newest album, The Lumineers are embarking on a world tour starting July 3rd, 2025.
