I’ll cut to the chase, Split Fiction is a really good video game. A cooperative only game, requiring two local or online connected players, Split Fiction stands tall amongst a sea of repeat single player story games made by the major studios in the industry.
Sometimes the dialogue will make you groan, but I am confident that Split Fiction has some of the most creative, fun and interesting levels in all of gaming. At one moment, me and my friend were playing dystopian pinball and the next second we were fighting an evil robotic dentist.
It may surprise you, but the level design of Split Fiction is not random. The amalgamation of different settings and worlds somehow blend together in a very coherent way. Every level feels incredibly distinctive, but relevant. This is a very impressive feat considering the range of levels and ideas the developers throw at you.
Me and my accomplice were engaged all the way throughout the entire 13 hours we played split fiction, and the game never stopped surprising us with fun and unexpected mechanics.
The gameplay of split fiction ranges from platforming, high octane side scrolling action, top down hack and slash, and even a challenging break dance section. Split fiction knows how to be fun, and knows how to never get too monotonous by always pulling the player back in. This is the game’s greatest strength.
The weakest part of split fiction is the story. Although serviceable with a satisfying ending, the story was generic and unengaging. On top of this, the actual unique parts of the story simply served as plot holes that made the storytelling even more shaky. The story has some good emotional moments, but not enough to make an impact on the player.
In summary, Split Fiction is worth every dollar if you are looking for an incredibly fun action platformer to play with a friend or a loved one. It is important to note that split fiction is cooperative only, meaning playing alone is not an option. (The game does offer cross-play and cross-platform features.) Despite its shaky story, Split Fiction is a game I would recommend everyone to play. The game left a lasting impression on me, and I would definitely say it is worth experiencing.
