“Captain America: Brave New World” is the newest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the fourth Captain America film. Different from the previous films, this movie stars Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, who takes it upon himself to find who was behind an assassination attempt.
To start, it’s difficult to go into this movie completely blind. Although many events and characters are quickly explained in the film, there are older MCU projects that are very important to ‘Brave New World,’ namely: ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,’ ‘Eternals (2021)’ and The Incredible Hulk (2008)’.
But is the movie good? From a narrative standpoint, I think critics are being too harsh on it. This movie is slower than some other Marvel movies, but the story is interesting and there were some intense scenes that had me on the edge of my seat, and I think the character writing is handled pretty well.
As for the bad, there are some scenes in the movie that do feel like they are out of place, and were added to the film at the last minute. Another huge part of the movie is that something happens at the end of the movie that is very exciting and intense, but it’s also in the trailers and posters. I do think that this movie would be much more enjoyable if you’ve managed to avoid any trailer or poster.
From a technical standpoint, it leaves a little to be desired. There are a lot of editing cuts in the fights that make it jarring, and sometimes the green screen is not very good, and it makes it difficult to believe that a character is actually standing in a certain place. The lighting and camera work is standard MCU filmwork, and I think that the directing is honestly above average.
‘Brave New World’ (as I mentioned before) is a little slow to start, but that doesn’t mean it was boring. I went in expecting to be bored but I ended up being mildly entertained by the mystery of the story and I thought the action sequences were super fun and creative.
The last thing to know is if this movie is important to future MCU films. This is difficult to know right now, but I do think that this movie is trying to set up the next Avengers movie, namely by figuring out the new Captain America’s place in the world.
I think if you’re expecting this movie to be a masterpiece you will be disappointed, but I do think “Captain America: Brave New World” is entertaining enough to be a worthwhile watch in the theater, but it’s not a must-see, and you could likely just wait for it to come to Disney+.
