December 5, Blackfoot School District’s superintendent Brian Kress uploaded a 30 minute video on the District #55 facebook account that stirred up tension in the comments.
In this thirty minute video Kress expressed his concerns about the upcoming legislative session. He shares his fear of a tax credit for private school tuition and how it could affect the Blackfoot School District and the public educational system. Kress believes that funds will be cut for public schools and addressed the possibility of our district losing money. Kress believes that taxpayer dollars should stay in southeast Idaho instead of going towards private schools outside of southeast Idaho like Nampa, Boise, and Coeur d’Alene.
While Kress got much support in the comments of the post, Facebook user William Spencer had other beliefs. Spencer claimed that the lies were strong and that no tax money would end up in Boise. In this comment, he claimed that “wokeness” in the schools affects the quality of education. He stated, “If the public schools are good you have no need to fear losing funding but my guess is that you are scared because last year you had a teacher asking preferred pronouns in the syllabus.”
Many came to the defense of Kress in the comments which caused the argument to deepen in the comment. Although Spencer had strong beliefs, the majority of the community showed great support for Kress.
Kress has since posted an updated video that can be viewed on the Blackfoot School District’s Facebook page.
