Tuesday, December 10 was the 2024 Career Fair. Every year the students at Blackfoot High School take a bus trip to another school where they can visit a plethora of booths. The booths represent a variety of different things, mostly colleges in Idaho, but there are also company and military booths.
Each booth has people who talk about their college, which includes teaching students about the different careers you can pursue, which subjects you can learn about, and how their college’s acceptance process works. Some of the booths even had games that students could play to earn a little trinket or souvenir.
Several students interviewed claimed that the career fair hasn’t helped them learn about colleges and careers because students already research colleges they are interested in on their own time. Many felt there wasn’t enough appeal from the career fair because it’s a yearly trip, and they already know what to expect.
As for how the career fair could be better, I asked some students what they would change to make the career fair better.
Many students who attended the career felt there could be improvements in the future. Brayden Boyce (12) claimed that the career fair needs more colleges, specifically outside of Idaho,
Susan Stringham (12) claimed that the booths should be organized better and sorted by program types.
Wendy Cox (12) claimed that the career fair would be better if it was marketed to be more important and a bigger deal since most students don’t care, and
Kelsey Case (12) claimed that the career fair needed more trade schools.
Even though it isn’t looked highly upon, every single student interviewed responded that they would rather be at the career fair, than back at school.
The college/career fair isn’t the greatest thing about school, but it is a breath of fresh air compared to what you do every day in school, and maybe with some minor changes, the career fair could become something beloved by BHS.
