Newspaper is an elective that anyone in Blackfoot High School can take and it’s available to take each trimester. In this class, which is taught by American Literature teacher, Hazel Folsom, you learn about the importance of news, how it works, and how to write news articles.
I highly recommend taking this class because it’s welcoming, educational and you get a lot of freedom with what you do in the class. Instead of a test, you have to write articles. One article is due every two weeks.
There are many topics of articles, including news (where you write about current events in the school or the town), features (where you can interview anyone you want), sports (where you talk about important sporting events and their season), and opinions (where you can write about any opinion you have). I enjoy the class because you can almost pick anything you want to write about, as long as it’s relevant to the topic that you picked.
Another thing that’s super fun in Newspaper, is the fact that we make videos where we do quick interviews with people, such as sports teams, teachers, or random students, and then we post the videos on our Instagram.
The average newspaper experience is starting the week by picking a topic and an article to write about or a video to record. You get two weeks to finish your project,, and once you’re done, you turn it in to your editor.
There is an editor of each topic (news, features, sports, opinions, social media), and they will review your article. If it meets the requirements, you can post your article to The BroncWriter news website, or post your video on the BroncWriter Instagram page.
I love Newspaper, because it’s full of a lot of great people, and you can have as much fun as you want as long as you turn in your assignments on time.
This class has taught me a lot, has helped bring me out of my comfort zone, and it’s reassuring to know that I can take this class all year and continue to have fun with everyone in the class. If you have an opening in your schedule, please consider joining Newspaper.
