“The Wild Robot” is the newest Dreamworks Animations movie, which was released on September 27, and debuted with remarkable reviews, such as 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.5 on IMDB.
The movie is directed by Chris Sanders (who co-directed How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Stitch) features a stacked voice cast (Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal), and has done surprisingly well at the box office, making $150 million at a budget of $78 million.
“The Wild Robot” follows a story about a futuristic robot who crash lands on an island full of forests and wild animals.
The robot, Roz, was programmed to complete tasks given to it by humans, but with no humans on the island, Roz struggles to find a purpose and is seen as a monster by all of the animals. Roz originally tries to leave the island, but everything changes when she finds a goose egg and is tasked to protect it.
Without spoiling the whole story, I highly recommend watching this movie. I think the biggest strength of this movie is that it can be watched and enjoyed by anyone.
The movie has one of the most sincere and beautiful depictions of family, and has a great story about parenting; kids will enjoy it for the animals and will relate to the goose character, while adults will enjoy it for the messages and relate to the robot’s parenting journey.
If you plan on watching “The Wild Robot,” please take your mom or son to go with you (but any member of your family will make it more meaningful.)
As for why this movie is good, “The Wild Robot” excels in its animation, music, and voice acting. The animation in this movie is beautiful; it has a paintbrush aesthetic (similar to “Puss in Boots: the Last Wish”) that makes every single frame in the movie look like it could be a picture in a book. The animals and robots in this movie are also more expressive than most humans in animated movies.
The music, composed by Kris Bowers, is wondrous and uplifting, it makes the wilderness more atmospheric and makes the emotional scenes hit hard.
Also, while most animated movies just throw in big-name actors who don’t really change their voices, the cast of “The Wild Robot” does an amazing job of blending into their roles.
Pedro Pascal is one of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood, but his performance as Fink the fox is spectacular and so fitting that many people didn’t recognize that it was Pedro until the credits. Lupita Nyong’o also does an amazing job playing Roz, which is one of the best performances of the entire year.
When I first watched The Wild Robot, I didn’t expect it to have many jokes or be funny at all, but I was pleasantly surprised because this is an incredibly funny movie, where it doesn’t feel annoying or immature. Small warning however, there are a few jokes in the movie that emphasize the danger of the wild and show some animals dying for comedic purposes, so if you have any children sensitive to animal death, they might not love the beginning.
I also want to mention how heartfelt this movie is. There were moments in the movie that made me cry, just because of how wholesome it is, or just because the emotions and relationships in this movie feel incredibly real. If you’re a fan of the 2019 movie Klaus, you’ll probably love The Wild Robot.
This movie isn’t perfect however, the only problems I have with the movie is that some scenes feel too short and some feel too long. The movie will also do this thing where it will have an intense scene, then cut to a different character, but then it doesn’t cut back to the previous scene, making you wonder what the purpose of the earlier scene was. Also, not really a problem with the movie, but there is a line near the end of the movie (if you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I’m referring to) that made me and my friends cringe.
Anyway, I absolutely loved “The Wild Robot” and highly recommend it to anyone. Also if you have seen it, please spread the word to get as many people as we can to watch it.
I think this movie is perfect for all ages and has one of the most emotional and mature stories I’ve ever witnessed on the big screen. I’ve seen it twice in theaters already and would go see it again. If I gave this a score I would give it a 10/10 in how much I enjoyed it, and a 9.4/10 for how good I think it was.
