This last Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the Indigenous club went to different schools in Blackfoot to show their dances and heritage. They did a girls’ fancy shawl, the grass dance, the traditional dance and they ended with the friendship dance.
At the beginning of the assembly, they came out and did a dance with the whole club. Then they introduced themselves over the speakers and did dances in different sections, separated between boys and girls.
At the very end of the assembly, they did a friendship dance, where they picked someone from the crowd and held hands and went around the seats. They had singers with a drum off to the side that they were dancing to the entire time.
“I really love just being involved, and representing not only myself but the club and people. We’re representing them by being ourselves” Ceara Vera (12) said.
Vera talks about how representing others is one of her favorite things about the club. She then gave some advice for future representatives in the club. “Be yourself, don’t try to outshine other people, be nice, and work together as a team. Be a team player.”
The assembly is always a fun experience for all the students and schools.
