The automotive club, also called SkillsUSA, is a program that prepares you for future careers in the automotive industry with competitions against other schools in the state with opportunities for scholarships
During club days in the automotive class, Morgan Gasca teaches about the subjects that they will be tested on in the competitions. Because clubs are only thirty minutes long, he leaves the SkillsUSA students with some “homework” to work on and strengthen their knowledge of the material they are tested on in competitions. Gasca also stated that the automotive classes are practically a necessity for doing well in competitions.
SkillsUSA is a good way to prepare students for the workforce as well as earn scholarships for technical colleges like Lincoln Tech. Gasca said that some students have earned scholarships from 10 thousand dollars up to 30 thousand dollars for Lincoln Tech.
Ava Savage, the SkillsUSA president, said other students should join SkillsUSA. “SkillsUSA’s vision is to produce the most highly skilled workforce in the world, providing every member with the opportunity for career success. This program offers many great opportunities because SkillsUSA Idaho works hand in hand with business and industry leaders. Students get the skills that Idaho employers want and need. Personally, I have had job offers just from being involved with the program. When competing, not only are you learning more about the trade you are studying, but it also shows you where to divert your attention when studying. You meet a lot of kind and helpful people while learning how to present yourself in a professional setting, which can differ depending on the field you are going into.”
